The citizens of Isabela Island reported the sighting of a sea elephant on the beach known as El Faro. This specimen of approximately 3 meters long was found by the Rangers of the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park.
This would be the second contact with a sea elephant in the Galapagos Islands. Studies indicate that the specimen could be an adult female, of the species Mirounga leonina, which is clearly different from the male, since it does not have the extension of the nose, which gives them the appearance of an elephant. This spice is commonly found in waters of the Antarctic Ocean
This species tends to migrate during the time they do not mate, since they usually swim long distances for food. Technicians suggest that like sea lions, the specimen may have been transported by sea currents that flow into the Galapagos Islands.
The place where the sea elephant is currently, is restricted access for visitor safety. The technicians mention about the probability that the sea elephant will migrate again in search of food.
Therefore, Casa Natura Galapagos Lodge aims to contribute to the conservation of species and natural areas on the islands. For us it is extremely important to raise awareness in our guests about all the efforts made to maintain biodiversity and balance in this natural paradise.
