Giant tortoises, the engineers of the ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands

18Jul

They are considered as the builders of the ecosystem since through their being herbivore and the spread of seeds, they have helped the formation of the vegetal communities, and in addition, they have opened roads that other species take advantage of for their mobilization.

It’s been 60 years since the National Park has been paying special attention to the 16 identified species of chelonians, including Santa Cruz, of which five have been extinguished. This happened long before the Galapagos National Park was created. They have proposed to recover three of the extinct giant tortoise species, which are: those of Floreana, Fernandina, and Pinta, which corresponds to the species of Solitaire George.

But today, the islands face more challenges such as dealing with the increase in population and the arrival of more tourists. Although visitors are a basic pillar in the economy of the islands, an increase in effort must be made to conserve them, since their massive presence can affect the islands. For that, tourism activity must be regulated, preserving the endemic flora and fauna of this wonderful natural corner.

Therefore, Casa Natura Galapagos Lodge aims to contribute to the conservation of species and natural areas on the islands. For us it is extremely important to raise awareness in our guests about all the efforts that are made to maintain biodiversity and balance in this natural paradise. If you are looking for a hotel in Galapagos that connects you directly with nature, Casa Natura Galápagos Lodge is the place for you! Scientific expedition finds a species of turtle considered extinct

21Jun

A species of turtle (Chelonoidis phantasticus) that was believed to have been extinct 100 years ago was found on Fernandina Island. It was found in its natural habitat, through an expedition carried out by the Giant Tortoise Restoration Initiative (GTRI), a project joined by other organizations, such as the Directorate of the Galapagos National Park and the conservation organization of Galápagos, which have an objective, locate new specimens and among them, was the enigmatic turtle. The Ministry of the Environment said that the Galapagos National Park “has the support to develop the necessary research to guarantee the conservation and preservation of the species in the Galapagos Islands”. The turtle was found, in the lower area of Fernandina Island.

It is an adult female that possibly exceeds one hundred years. However, genetic studies will be carried out to reconfirm that the specimen found is of the Fernandina Island species. The turtle was transported by boat, from Fernandina, to the Giant Turtle Breeding Center in Santa Cruz, where it will remain under the custody of park rangers and in an individual pen for their stay. There is a possibility that there are more individuals in Fernandina, since they found traces and excrements in different areas of the island, separated by lava traces of recent eruptions. Fernandina is one of the youngest islands in the archipelago. It has an area of 638 square kilometers, being the third largest island of the Galápagos archipelago. Its volcano, La Cumbre, is one of the most active in the world.

Galapagos Islands: Annual Christmas Bird Count

28Dec

In 1900, the United States and Canada were the pioneers in establishing the “Christmas bird count”. This count allows you to determine the state of the different bird populations with the involvement of the community. Since 2016, the Galapagos Islands are part of this initiative. In the Galapagos Islands, the annual bird count is carried out by the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation. The main objective is to allow the community to get involved in this project with the purpose of collecting information and evaluating the state in which the land birds of the Galapagos Islands are found. In general, the community can be part of this activity during December 2018. This research focuses on the species: Galapagos Dove, Owls and the Vermilion Flycatcher. However, if the community find information about other birds, it is also received by the Charles Darwin Foundation.

Casa Natura is a hotel in the Galapagos committed in the conservation of the birds of the Enchanted Islands. For this reason, we invite our guests and the community to become part of this project that will take place in this month of December.
